Day 96: What Will You Believe?
Please read the Bible verses for today:
Matthew 22:23-33
Marriage at the Resurrection
23 "That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27 Finally, the woman died. 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?” (Matthew 22:23-28)
These guys are still at it! The Sadducees are trying to trap Jesus again! In Morning Moments with God, we have read on days 91-95 how the teachers of the law question Jesus in order to try and trap him. Of course, Jesus always knew their schemes ahead of time and was not fooled by them. But what is amazing to me is after so many times of trying to trick Jesus they're at it again! The other thing that completely shocks me is how hard their hearts were. As they tried over and over to trap Jesus, Jesus tried to show them their sin and their future punishment if they didn't stop. Nothing Jesus said convicted their hearts. Here the Sadducees come to Jesus asking about the resurrection and they themselves do not even believe in the resurrection!
29 "Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.”
33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching." (Matthew 22:29-33)
Jesus addresses what they do not believe- they do not believe in: life after death or angels. They have to first believe in the life that comes after our bodies die in order to understand what heaven will be like- as far as husbands and wives existing in heaven. Jesus tells them that there is more waiting for us and it is in heaven! God is alive and on the throne and we will see Him and live in heaven with Him! It is glorious! The Sadducees, as well as all of us, have an opportunity to believe in Jesus and what He has done for us. It is our choice to hear and disbelieve or hear and believe. What will you believe?
Pray with me:
Father, I thank you for all you have done for me! Thank you for opening my eyes to your Word, your Truth! Thank you that heaven is real and I will be with you on the day of my death here on earth! Thank you that there is hope! Thank you that there is no fear of dying! Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins and reconciling me to you! In Jesus' Name, Amen.
